There's no perfect fee arrangement that fits all clients and all disputes. My starting place is always the list of factors specified in Rule 1.04 of the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct. Within those broad guidelines, there are several different types of fee arrangements that can make good economic sense for both lawyer and client.
Two categorical statements about fees in my law practice: And whatever rate my meter may tick at, or however those ticks are to be measured, my meter only starts running when my new client has deliberately turned it on. The client does that by signing a formal engagement letter that I've custom-tailored to document our mutual commitments.
