Board certification

The Texas Board of Legal Specialization has certified me as a specialist in Civil Trial Law. The Board requires that applicants for certification —

  • be licensed for at least five years;

  • meet stiff requirements for the percentage of one's practice time devoted only to that specialty over a three-year minimum period;

  • meet other demanding objective standards specific to each specialty area (for civil trial law, the requirements for cumulative days-in-trial and total numbers of first-chair cases tried to conclusion are so ambitious that they disqualify the vast majority of Texas lawyers);

  • have attended, and continue to attend, specially vetted continuing legal education seminars (beyond that required of all Texas lawyers);

  • pass an evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges (including those with, against, and before whom the applicant has practiced); and

  • pass a rigorous six-hour written examination that is geared to the applicant's specialty area.

Operating under the continuing jurisdiction of the Texas Supreme Court, the TBLS certifies attorneys in 21 select areas of law, and it is the only organization authorized by law to provide this service to the citizens of Texas. Less than 10% of Texas' 70,000+ licensed lawyers are board certified in any specialty area, so there are, of course, many fine Texas lawyers who are not certified.

Avvo.com

To help clients locate lawyers and compare their qualifications, Avvo.com maintains a searchable database and rates every lawyer licensed in Texas. It also publishes evaluations from clients and peer endorsements from other professionals — and my Avvo profile includes both.

As part of my pro bono efforts, I also participate in the Avvo Answers program, through which lawyers offer their general reactions to consumers' questions. My collected answers there may give you a meaningful preview of how I approach legal problems and communicate with actual clients.
